Saudi Arabia chief sends fresh Premier League message as Newcastle takeover nears

Newcastle are still awaiting approval on their prospective takeover from the Premier League.
The Saudi Arabia Football Federation (SAFF) have addressed concerns over tackling piracy, sending a letter to the Premier League insisting they will stand firm against any infringements. Newcastle are still waiting on a decision from the Premier League on whether the Saudi-led group can complete the takeover of the north-east club.
The World Trade Organisation recently published a 125-page report which centred on piracy
issues in Saudi Arabia.
The report found that Saudi Arabia had not provided "criminal procedures and penalties" to
tackle pirate pay broadcaster beoutQ.
There was no mention of Newcastle or the prospective takeover from Saudi Arabia's Public
Investment Fund, but it raised questions on whether the Premier League would allow the
takeover to go ahead.
The UK Government has also come under pressure to take action and block the £300million
takeover.
But, the Yasser Almisehal, the president of the SAFF, has released a letter to a number of
governing bodies - including the Premier League - addressing their stance on piracy issues.
"It should be noted that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was not implicated in any criminal
offence regarding the broadcasting of sporting rights," an excerpt from the letter
reads.
"Copyright piracy is a global issue that impacts many sports and rights holders in many
territories.
"It holds no place in sport and as a member association of the FIFA, we fully understand the
need to protect and respect intellectual property rights."
It comes after the The Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property announced they would be
shutting down 231 piracy websites and imposing fines in excess of £50,000 for
offenders.
It seems though the Premier League are set to make a decision in the near future.
A report over the weekend claimed the takeover is set to be approved and an announcement
could come as early as this week.
Given the wealth of the prospective new owners has led to plenty of speculation suggesting
Steve Bruce could be replaced, with Mauricio Pochettino touted as a possible target.
Bruce though has all-but sealed Newcastle's position in the Premier League for next season
with the club just two points away from 10th-placed Arsenal.
And the 59-year-old is hopeful that he has done enough to be given a chance heading into
next season.
“It could only happen to Newcastle! I've only been here for nearly a year but are we
surprised?" Bruce said.
“I've just let it go over my head because there is nothing I can do.
“If I can help them I would love to stay in charge. I hope I get the chance.”
